In this, chronologically the first Nell Bray story (it is set in the year 1900, the last year of the reign of Queen Victoria) we enter a world very like our own (at least compared with the medieval world where I spend so much of my time!)), but also utterly different.

 

Nell, Imogen and Midge, three girls studying at Cambridge (where girls have recently been admitted as students but are still not permitted to take degree examinations – for fear, as Nell observes, they will show up all the boys!) go north for the long vacation in the company of three boys, also students, and a young don, Meredith. They have been invited to stay at the country home of the great-uncle of one of the boys and are proposing to spend the summer discussing philosophy (Meredith is a philosopher). However, their welcome is weird, and the situation weirder. Their has been one death already, of which the Old Man, Alan's great-uncle, is accused, and soon another occurs. Nell, who is of a practical rather than a philosophical turn of mind – she prefers facts to ideas – is drawn to the Old Man and cannot help investigating on his behalf: this despite the Old Man's ideas on women!

 

'Which of them do you belong to?'

'I beg your pardon?' I stared at him, wondering what he meant. College, political party?

'Which one of the men? If you get all that straight at the start, saves trouble later.'

I suppose I just stood there, gaping at him. He grinned.

'I should hope my nephew's taken the pretty one and the man with the laugh's got his eye on the little one. Can't make out you and the other two, though.'

There was no need to draw myself up to my full height because I was already taller than he was.

'I can assure you for the three of us that we're not in the ownership of any man and we never will be.'

'Of course you will. You all seem healthy nice-looking girls. You've got a bit of a temper by the look of it, but some men like that. You'll marry all right.'

'If we decide to marry we shall enter into a free relationship of equals. The idea of a wife being subservient, let alone owned, as you put it, is downright disgusting.'

 

And a little later, speaking of the stallion, and the fact that the mares are his mares:

 

'I don't suppose they have much choice in the matter.'

'They don't need choice. They're happy.'

'Don't women need choices, then?'

'No. Doesn't make them any happier and only causes a lot of trouble and confusion.'

'So that's why we don't need votes, I suppose.'

'Nobody needs votes. Whichever side you vote for you end up with meddling idiots.'

'If parliament gives women the vote, perhaps we won't keep getting idiots elected.'

'Give? They'll never just give it to you. If you want anything, you just have to go and take it. If you all wanted it enough, you'd have had it by now.'

It's always seemed odd to me that this remark, from an old man I thought was certainly misguided and quite probably mad, turned out to have more influence on the next twenty years of my life than all the sober good sense I'd heard from my friends and teachers ...

 

For yes, Nell, who is very self-consciously a New Woman, becomes one of the suffragettes, the women who took Direct Action against a government that, as they had no vote, did not represent them, and it is as a suffragette that we see her in the other books, including the excellent Sister Beneath the Sheet, which I am now reading. And it has struck me that in every generation there are women who think of themselves as the New Woman. Nell's ideas, so shocking, so revolutionary at the time, would have seemed very tame to a New Woman of the post World War years, the 1920s or 30s, or the post World War II years, the 40s and 50s, or the New Woman of the swinging 60s, or of the 70s or 80s, let alone of the 21st century. How quaint we shall seem in a few years' time ... But what I want to say is that each generation of New Women is subtly different, and the rebels against Victorianism (how ironical that that should be named after a woman!) were one of the most interesting, and Gillian Linscott has got it just right. I like to think that if I had been born a hundred years earlier, I might have been a little like Nell.
